Floor or roof sheathing conforming with this table shall be deemed to meet the design criteria of section 2304 7. Sheathing should be a minimum of 19 32 inch thick. Never attach roof sheathing with staples. That s considered to be the minimum.

The requirement became effective on october 1 2007. The roof sheathing plywood or osb has to be be nailed with 8d eight penny ring shank round head nails at six inches on center. Specifies the minimum sheathing thickness for framing spaced 24 inches on center based on exposure category and wind speed. Cap nail shank shall have a length sufficient to penetrate through the roof sheathing or not less than 3 4 inch into the roof sheathing.

8d ring shank nails should be used instead. If it was originally secured using staples or 6d nails it must be completely re nailed to the new standard. The bottom layer shall be 18 inches 457 mm and the top layer a minimum of 36 inches 914 mm wide. The typical thickness range for sheathing is 3 8 to 3 4 inch.

Fasteners shall comply with astm f1667. Roof sheathing thickness unlike with plywood siding the plywood sheet to be used for sheathing should be at least 3 8 inch thick. An excerpt of table r803 2 2 is shown in the next column. Minimum thickness of the outside edge of plastic caps shall be 0 035 inch.

For closed valleys valley lining of one ply of smooth roll roofing complying with astm d 6380 classsand atleast36 inches 914 mm wide or valley lining as described in item 1 or 2 above shall be permitted. While ring shank nails are still required the nail size depends on the sheathing thickness. The cap nail shank shall be not less than 0 083 inch for ring shank cap nails and 0 091 inch for smooth shank cap nails.
